◯◯◯Teen Pregnancy, Trouble, and Tragedy. These are just some of the things that Bobby has faced. But he's come a long way, and he's got a story to tell.
Then vs. Now
The book is split up into then and now chapters. This was creative and realistic way to portray a story like this. Often times when one is going through something that majorly alters one's life there isn't time to stop and remember to logically think out every decision, but once the dust settles comes the time to reflect.
What if?
Bobby and his girlfriends original decision to give the baby up for adoption is of special interest. As a young couple they think that they are doing what's best and that they know that this is what they would want as well, however, after the baby is born and after Nia becomes comatose, Bobby realizes he could never give his daughter up. This situation is extremely relatable in that in many instances one thinks they've made up their minds about something, but eventually realize that that decision had been completely the opposite of what was decided to begin with.
"What If" What if we always stuck to original decisions all the time? What if we hadn't changed our minds about certain life events?...we might not know all that we could have missed out on.
How Does it End?
The ending of the book gives readers some hope that things might turn out to be okay for Bobby and his daughter, he decides to move out of NYC and to Heaven, Ohio where his uncle seems to be raising a successful family. The ending is somewhat positive, but the book still keeps it's realistic tone . Sometimes in life there seems to be obvious solutions, maybe this will be a solution for Bobby--most likely it will only be a step in the right direction. Bobby shows maturity when he decides to move...he makes an investment in his future.
It's okay not to always have solution...sometimes it's okay simply to take small steps in a better direction.
